She has finally come out to apologize to her fans, family and friends for what she did not actually do. A lunatic viciously violates your rights and because another person takes offence, you take it upon yourself with the excruciating pain you are going through to say sorry for having been vulnerable in the first place. Definition of nobility.
We have a big hysterical problem with nude photos, sexy images, and the people who feature. We find the thought of it grotesque and yet yearn for erotica. Boy, don’t we love reconnoitering our sexuality! Many a times, folks literally undress people in their imaginations and fantasize the naked body and how it would be if shit happened.
A lot has been said, written and shared about the private life of Desire Luzinda with utter contempt to her right to privacy.
Because some jilted looser of a lover chose to behave worse than the rural boys from my village in Mafudu, the public has been sharing the nude photos and gross videos as if they are possessed by a spirit.
This entire debacle would not be complete without a certain Lokodo making a fool of himself. The old man chose to flagrantly parade his dumbfounding legal ignorance by opening his mouth to order the police to arrest and prosecute a victim of an assault on her right to privacy. He quotes a defunct legal baby of his. The Anti-Pornography Act which is now in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the Constitutional Court vide constitutional petition No. 13 of 2014.
If I may ask, how holy is Mr. Lokodo to think that he should persecute Desire rather than look to offer her protection and guidance if he felt she was a lost sheep? Very disgusting.
And what is this new trend of people coming up with Bills and then they start behaving as if they own them. We had David Bahati and now this joke. It is almost as if they come up with these bills to impose their wish on us. Talk about the Anti-Gay bill and you have Bahati animated and here, talk of pornography and someone stops thinking rationally.
It is as if they forget that this is not their home where they get to police their families and neither is the world a church. There is something called universality where we all, irrespective, have to fit in this small globe. Period.
Today, if Kim Kardashian or Madonna came down here to Serena, you would see folks jostling to part with over $100 just to touch her garment. Many that would not make it would resign to their kafundas to watch Agataliiko Nfufuu in body but the mind will be in Serena.
When our own Desire falls victim, we draw our daggers rather than seek to defend her rights. We castigate Desire and praise the Kardashians of this world. Really?
In the past, we witnessed Gaetano Kagwa having sex on live television in the Big Brother House. He landed at Entebbe to a heroes welcome. Forget the local Museveni pilau welcome joke of a party the Todwong’s of this world organized. This was massive. An excited Museveni ordered a Chopper to fly the chap to the countryside so that he could just shake his hands while the news was still hot. The guy was a king! He was no prince to any monarchy lineage and neither was he from any war. His triumph was laying a lady on live TV. He now lives his dream.
Next came the leaked nudes of a tall songstress Cindy. I woke up to photos of unclothed Cindy with three smiling faces of pussycats in the Red Pepper. One in the centre and two around the chest area. I prefer not to conjecture on what they were covering! I had no Whatsapp then; so I didn’t see the real things and I guess not many did. It passed with less storm. Fast forward, Cindy lives on as though nothing happened.
Then we had the Bad Black shocker. Explicit photos of an exhausted, unclothed Bad Black laying on a bed with both legs wide open with packs of Rough Rider condoms were littered on her bare chest. You could see pretty much as you can of Desire. But then again that was her. Bad Black. The world again quickly moved on. After undergoing several surgeries, she is more light skinned, has an enhanced nose and the bust is something you may write home about. She is in the coolers for fraud but life goes on.
Then came the nudes of Maama Fiina! These were understandably short-lived in the public domain. Not even Red Pepper squizzed all the juice out of this like we see today with Desire, Amama Mbabazi or like it did with Bad Black. The court injunction notwithstanding.
Today, Desire Luzinda finds herself in the same circle. She should be given a break. She did nothing wrong. We all do inexplicable things when in love or intimate. That is her right as an adult; to relate with anyone she chooses when and how. People are free to do all sorts of things to impress their lovers in private.
I know you do your share of crazy things that if they leaked, you would go AWOL in record time. But, that there is the benefit of privacy to you as a human.
The level at which Desire’s privacy has been intrusively breached raises very key privacy questions.
In the wake of privacy-intrusive technologies such as social media, CCTV cameras in public places, finger prints scans, cell phone tracking, phone call tapping, transactional data, SIM card registrations, mobile phones with capabilities of photographing or recording audios with just a click, data recovery software among others, we need to move fast to protect the right to privacy.
I advice that we study the right to privacy laws of South Africa and pick a few best practices from the well developed legal framework.
To Desire, get up and move on! When Madonna found herself in the nude photo scandal after her photos were published in the Playboy and Penthouse magazines in 1985, she weathered the criticism and came out more determined in life to succeed.
The Queen of Pop was quoted noting, “That was the first time I was aware of speaking with my attitude. ‘You’re trying to put me down because of this?’ I (wasn’t) going to let public opinion dictate my own feelings about myself”.
